Illumi Run 2016
Arrive early at the race site (who does that?) and you’ll be greeted to the DJs awkwardly hyping up the sparse crowd in broad daylight at the holding area. As the sun sets and the crowd builds, the atmosphere turns more party-like with the blinking foam sticks and goggles lighting up the area.
Scrutinizing the crowd a bit made me wonder if I missed the memo about the age limit. Everyone clearly looks like they're taking advantage of the school holidays. A quick Google search highlighted the various tertiary school discounts available. Cautiously, I waded through the crowd of jail bait and tried to have as much fun while sober.
Starting off the run (or rather, romantic night stroll by the beach), you'll be squirted surprisingly with coloured goo that'll make you look like unicorns got too excited on you. The brief 5km route is littered with 5 additional similar zones of various themes (try to spot the difference) where they'll squirt and blast at you some more.
Despite the short route, you'll spend your time more camwhoring at these zones trying to catch the neon splatters on your face. Besides, the music was pretty good and you can even catch the hot DJs spinning live. If you're not spending at least an hour on the route, you're not partying hard enough.
The end point is where the real party begins. Back at Palawan Green, the scene is akin to an underage Ultra music festival. The youthful crowd was thoroughly enjoying the beats as late as their curfew allows.
There's also other fringe activities, like the Illumi Glow Slide for those not splattered enough. The F&B booth was set to refuel you, though the beer tap looks pretty much untouched. The crowd also seemed to favour the nearby McDonald's more.
Overall, Illumi Run was a whole load of harmless fun. Set against the backdrop of the beach at night, it’s the perfect setting whether you’re going with a partner or with your raving friends. If you’re above schooling age, you might better off waiting a few weeks more for the Siloso Beach Party, but it’s still a good warm up. So bring your nieces and nephews, stuff them with candy and enjoy the obnoxious juvenile high.
